Family, friends, coworkers and supporters of Koran Irvine gathered outside a Lower Manhattan courthouse Tuesday, demanding justice for the 46-year-old husband, father and longtime Con Edison worker who was fatally shot on the George Washington Bridge.

The emotional rally came as retired NYPD detective Victor Romero appeared publicly for the first time since his arrest — and as the charges against him were upgraded to second-degree murder.

Irvine’s wife and family stood alongside scores of supporters, including Con Edison workers. The family and its representatives also called for Mayor Zohran Mamdani to take action as they continued raising concerns about how the case has been handled and whether Romero received preferential treatment because of his law-enforcement background.

But beyond the calls for accountability were reminders of the man at the center of it all.

During an emotional speech, Irvine’s sister shared memories of her brother — including his love for his beloved Volkswagen, the same vehicle that was tragically shot up. She also spoke about something painfully ordinary that the family should have been doing today: gathering together for Taco Tuesday.

Instead, they were gathered outside a courthouse fighting for justice.

The rally came on the same day Romero’s face was publicly revealed as he appeared in court.

Today brought a major development for Irvine’s family: the charge they had been demanding — murder — is now the charge Romero faces.
