Episode 5, “Homecoming,” delivers an emotional turning point for The Drop: A Snowfall Saga, revealing how Lamar and James lost their mother and why their grandparents fear Lamar’s musical ambitions.
Big Daddy (Mykelti Williamson) and Mama G gather the family to explain Rochelle’s death. Through flashbacks, we meet a gifted singer whose professional success came with a painful distance from her children. Returning home, she discovers that her parents have invited her estranged husband, with Mama G hoping to repair a relationship that fractured while he managed Rochelle’s career.
The reunion exposes wounds that haven’t healed. Rochelle watches her children embrace their father while struggling to connect with her. Overwhelmed, she retreats to the bathroom to snort cocaine, where a young Wanda catches her. The encounter becomes a chilling introduction to the drug that would later nearly claim Wanda’s own life. Wanda’s arrival during the present-day family conversation makes that history feel even more immediate.
One of the episode’s most powerful moments comes when Rochelle takes to the piano. Her soulful performance brings Mama G to tears, briefly allowing her talent to speak through the tension. But the moment unravels when Big Daddy yells at her, prompting Rochelle to leave.
Later, Rochelle and her ex revisit the location of their first date in the Hollywood Hills. On the drive home, he reveals that he wants to get back into business with her. Rochelle believes the reunion was a setup—that he used her parents to regain access to her career. Their argument escalates into a physical fight, and she stabs him. As he loses consciousness and control of the wheel, their vehicle crashes into an oncoming car.
The revelation explains the fear running through Lamar’s household. For Big Daddy and Mama G, his pursuit of music threatens to reopen the devastation they associate with Rochelle’s life and death. Their resistance comes from grief, but their attempt to protect him has also kept him trapped inside a story he never fully understood.
They hope the truth will end his ambitions. Instead, it gives Lamar a reason to break free. Knowing what happened allows him to confront the family’s trauma and pursue his future with a clearer understanding of the risks.
Meanwhile, Lamar and Wanda’s excitement over Artillery’s growing street success carries a darker implication: more attention means more exposure, and success puts new pressure on already fragile relationships.
The episode also makes room for a knowing cultural detail. While looking through old photographs with James, Big Daddy picks up JET and immediately flips to its swimsuit feature—a familiar nod to the magazine’s place in Black households.
Then a bloodied man breaks into the home, jolting Lamar back into the present. After an episode spent uncovering yesterday’s tragedy, danger arrives at the front door.
