Trackmasters producer and music executive Rich Nice recently reflected on working with legendary Queens MC Kool G Rap and helping shape one of the rapper’s classic records.

While discussing G Rap’s impact and lyrical ability, Rich recalled the sessions surrounding “Ill Street Blues,” the Trackmasters-produced standout from Kool G Rap & DJ Polo’s 1992 album Live and Let Die.

Rich has previously revealed that he encouraged G Rap to go back and redo his second verse on the record, a decision that helped shape the final version fans know today.

The collaboration came during the early days of Trackmasters, when the production team was establishing its sound through its relationship with Cold Chillin’ Records. Trackmasters would go on to become one of hip-hop and R&B’s most successful production teams, working with artists including Nas, Jay-Z, 50 Cent, LL Cool J and Will Smith.

For Rich, working with Kool G Rap meant collaborating with one of the MCs who helped set the standard for the generation that followed.
